Derek Webb
Caedmons Call is one of my favorite bands. They are Christian band with an acoustic folk sound. Their music is great and they have great lyrics to boot! Great lyrics meaning they actually sing about something. Derek Webb was the primary songwriter for the band and was responsible for writing, in my opinion, some of the bands best music. Webb has gone solo and recently released a new album called Mockingbird.
Below are the lyrics to a song from his new album. The song is called "New Law" and it deals with the issue of Christian liberty. Read the lyrics and post your thoughts. If you want to see the music video you can visit his myspace site at http://www.myspace.com/derekwebb
New Law
Don’t teach me about politics and government
Just tell me who to vote for
Don’t teach me about truth and beauty
Just label my music
Don’t teach me how to live like a free man
Just give me a new law
I don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
So just bring it down from the mountain to me
I want a new law
I want a new law
Gimme that new law
Don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
I prefer a shot of grape juice
Don’t teach me about loving my enemies
Don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
Just give me a new law
What’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
For one you can
That cannot get you anything
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid
Do not be afraid

Smokin Song! I would like to hear the music!
The only comment I have is the band seems to be paying attenttion to current political thought and dogma!

I notice the the writer of the song seems to be expressing the idea of using one's mind rather than just blindly being led. It is almost as though the writer thinks we have a choice, a free will so to speak. I hope he is not suggesting that life is not planned out for us and that we must in some sense participate in life by making our own decisions. That would truly be frieghteing. I appreciate the fact the everything in my life is predetermined and I never need to question what I do or think about my actions because they have been determined by God. I can enjoy just going about my day discovering what new sin I have been destined to commit. Oh happy day!

Of course we have a choice. God being sovereign can do as he pleases including give man a free will. I do believe man's free will is very limited however.
It isn't until a person becomes a believer he or she is truly free. Hence the phrase Christian liberty.
How far does that liberty go though?
